Macau Pass teams with Alipay

Macau Pass says local retailers can now apply to upgrade their terminals to accept payments from Alipay Wallet and UnionPay QuickPass cards.
The move follows a deal forged with Alipay, the Alibaba payments subsidiary, announced on Friday at the Macau International Electronics & Global Audiovisual Expo.
“This new service mainly targets the city’s souvenir shops, supermarkets, convenience stores, bakeries and restaurants,” said Macau Pass MD George Zhang.
“It is a service that basically targets small-amount transactions.
“More and more tourists have Alipay Wallet installed in their mobile phones. From today, they can use their Alipay Wallet to shop at local souvenir shops and good restaurants.”
Zhang said some local shows are already working through the terminal upgrade process.
Meanwhile, Macau Pass is working on a mobile payment service for holders of stored-value cards which would give them access to Chinese online shopping site Taobao.com.
Zhang said some “technical and clearance issues” had yet to be resolved before the new stored-value service could be implemented.
