Macau retail outlets under assessment

Macau retail outlets are about to undergo their latest annual assessment, aimed at keeping them honest and ensuring service quality.
The Macau Consumer Council launches this year’s round of on-site evaluations under its Certified Shops scheme. Nearly 1500 shops will be assessed using more than 30 grading principles.
Launched in 2001, the Certified Shop mechanism aims to safeguard the rights of consumers, and the council says it has also boosted the confidence of both local and foreign visitors in Macau’s retail outlets. The council uses scientific, systematic and objective assessment criteria, including on-site evaluation, mystery shoppers and complaint records.
An assessment team starts the evaluations this month, with work continuing until the end of the year, when the results are announced. The first step is on-site evaluations of about 1500 certified shops and “adherents”, looking at such elements as business practices, after-sales service, price labelling and state of the premises. Shops being evaluated may be asked to provide documents or information.
