FamilyMart and UNY Group Holdings have merged to create Japan’s second-largest convenience-store chain.
FamilyMart, Japan’s No. 3 convenience-store chain, and UNY, the owner of fourth-ranked Circle K Sunkus, agreed last October on a merger. The result will be about 6250 Circle K Sunkus stores being rebranded as FamilyMart, reports Sankei Shimbun.
The FamilyMart merger will create a new company, called FamilyMart Uny, which will run about 17,000 convenience stores in Japan. The industry leader, 7-Eleven Japan, has 18,572 stores. Lawson is third with 12,995 stores in Japan.
FamilyMart Uny will also run supermarkets.
