A young couple has been arrested at Ion Orchard’s Louis Vuitton outlet after trying to buy items with counterfeit credit cards.

Singapore police say an assortment of counterfeit credit cards and items worth more than $30,000 were recovered from the couple. The items are believed to have been bought using the counterfeit credit cards.

Five police cars converged on the shopping centre after an alert sales assistant decided to hang on to the cards and call the authorities. Ten officers responded to the call, a witness has told Shin Min Daily News.

Another eyewitness told the newspaper that the stylishly dressed couple strode confidently into the store and picked out three items. Despite repeated tries, the store was unable to process the cards, which had electronic chips embedded.

Shin Min says the woman panicked when the credit cards could not be processed and ran to a nearby toilet while the man ran to the other side of the mall.

The couple will be charged with cheating and may be fined and/or jailed for up to 10 years.
