Japanese restaurant fined $36,000 for false description

A Kowloon court has fined a Japanese restaurant HK$36,000 for giving a false description of its barbecue buffet.

This contravenes Hong Kong’s Trade Descriptions Ordinance (TDO).

Acting on information, Hong Kong Customs did a test buy at the chain restaurant. An investigation showed that some food and drink items as advertised were not available to customers.

Under the TDO, it is an offence for anyone to give a false trade description or to have goods for sale with a false trade description. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.
