Mui Kee hawker stall heads for Singapore

Hong Kong hawker stall Mui Kee is about to make its debut in Singapore.

Known for its fish broth congee, Mui Kee is partnering with the Les Amis Group in Singapore, which runs the double Michelin-Star Les Amis in Shaw Centre.

Mui Kee will launch on June 30 as a six-month-long pop-up in Les Amis’ Casa Verde restaurant, which serves Western and local food in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The congee will be available for breakfast and lunch only.

A permanent restaurant is scheduled to launch by the end of the year.

Eight types of congee will be offered at the pop-up, featuring ingredients such as dace fish belly sauteed with rice wine, meatballs, pig’s innards and sliced beef.

The Les Amis Group runs more than 20 restaurants in Singapore, including Jinzakaya yakitori and sake bar in Farrer Park, the NamNam Noodle Bar chain and the seven-outlet Peperoni Pizzeria chain. It also has three restaurants in Hong Kong – Bistro Du Vin, seafood bistro Le Port Parfume and Piccolo Pizzeria & Bar.

Chairman Desmond Lim approached Mui Kee to open in Singapore after he tried the congee, which his employees in Hong Kong recommended.

“Although the Les Amis Group is often associated with fine dining, we want to bring in good food, regardless of the cuisine and price point,” says a spokesperson for the group.

She says the team was “blown away” by the taste and texture of the congee as well as the rich heritage of the 26-year-old stall in Fa Yuen Street Market, Mong Kok, which attracts a steady stream of tourists.

Mui Kee’s third-generation owner, Pierre Choi, says that for the past seven years, tourists from Singapore have made up about half of his stall’s overseas visitors. The stall offers more than 30 varieties of congee and sells 300 to 400 bowls a day.

To ensure consistent quality, Choi will be based in Singapore for the first two to three weeks of the pop-up, and visit once or twice a month thereafter.
