Dining in Macau has taken a dip, with more than half its restaurants and cafes failing to grow sales during June.
In its monthly survey, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) found a one-point decline from the previous month with 45 per cent of respondents reporting an upswing in receipts.
Local-style cafes, congee and noodle shops fared the best, with 48 per cent reporting increased custom (up three points), followed by 45 per cent of Western restaurants (up 10 points) and 44 per cent of Chinese restaurants – a drop from May’s 63 per cent.
Meanwhile, the percentage of restaurants reporting falling patronage was constant at 33 per cent.
It was a similar picture for retail, with 46 per cent of retailers reporting improved sales in June, a one-point drop on May. Standing out from the pack, all leather goods retailers surveyed reported increased turnover, as was the case the previous month, while 56 per cent of retailers selling watches, clocks and jewellery, as well as supermarkets, saying sales had improved from a year ago.
Only half of adult clothing retailers (down 15 points) and 33 per cent of department stores (down 22 points) reported a rise in sales.
About 34 per cent of retailers (down two points) say their year-on-year sales declined. The percentage of department stores reporting poorer business grew by 22 points.
DSEC’s survey covered 167 eateries and 135 retailers.
