Big Box hypermart in Jurong East will host the inaugural Outsider fashion and art festival, with works on display for grocery shoppers.

From Friday to Sunday, the “anti-elitist” festival will showcase designers and visual artists from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand as well as Singapore. The organisers are hoping that with the familiar setting of a supermarket visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the showcase.

“Both fashion and art have a profound cause and effect on society, often mirroring or even shaping pop culture, yet current fashion and arts festivals can come off as highbrow and ostracise the wider community,” says festival director Zachary Goh. “Outsider sets out to achieve an open presentation everyone can identify with.”

Singapore-born Simon Ng, the festival’s headline artist, is collaborating with fashion label Voltaire Visions for an exhibit featuring artwork and apparel.

There will also be art installations by 10 Singapore artists and 45 works by fashion graduates from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). The NAFA works will be displayed for an extended period, until October 29.
