Uniqlo’s bold Indian agenda

Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo plans to open up to 1000 stores across India within 10 years.

The company’s representatives, including chairman Tadashi Yanai, have met Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, to discuss its ambition for India.

It plans to apply for single-brand retail, adding it will source garments from India.

“We are looking to invest in the retail business in India. We will look to open 1000 stores but it will take more than 10 years as it is not easy to open so many stores,” said a company’s representative, who declined to be named.

Uniqlo was reportedly keen to expand into India several years ago, but postponed its plan due to lack of clarity on the numerous conditions imposed on foreign investment.

The Indian expansion forms part of its parent Fast Retailing’s aim to become the world’s largest retailer by 2020.
