Following customer complaints, the Macau Customs Service has raided seven chain-store outlets allegedly selling counterfeit spectacles and sunglasses.

Disgruntled customers accompanied squads of Customs officers in the raids to help point out the fakes. The officers seized 1507 pairs of glasses bearing several brand-name trademarks. Had the items been genuine, their value would be an estimated MOP1.5 million (US$186,500).

Two people were arrested, a 44-year-old resident and a 35-year-old non-local worker.

Customs says the counterfeit products were bought from Hong Kong and Mainland China. Each pair of spectacles was bought for MOP400-700 and being sold at about MOP600-1000 each.

The duo will be prosecuted under the city’s industrial property laws and cargo fraud regulations.
