Giant aquarium opens at Central Phuket shopping centre

Thailand’s largest aquarium and the world’s largest underwater restaurant have opened at the Central Phuket shopping centre.

The mall’s operator, Central Pattana (CPN), says the facilities – Aquaria Phuket and Andasi which is also Asia’s first underwater bar – will draw more visitors to the complex, offering travel experiences that cannot be found elsewhere and strengthening Central Phuket as ‘The Luxury & Leisure Resort Shopping Destination’.

“These two [attractions] are … the final jigsaw pieces that complete Central Phuket’s world-class attractions and are now fully ready to welcome tourists from around the world,” said Dr Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana, executive VP of marketing at CPN.

“We are confident that Aquaria Phuket will soon become a must-visit aquarium for tourists. This latest world-class attraction will elevate Phuket to be a true ‘Global Beach Lifestyle Destination’ in addition to help push forward economic growth and the tourism industry of Phuket and Thailand.”

The 10,000sqm aquarium space, described as an “edutainment attraction” was developed in partnership with Aquawalk Group.

“We sincerely believe that we can help to contribute in promoting Phuket as a tourism destination of choice in Asia and help to attract tourists to downtown Phuket,” said Aquawalk Group MD, Dato Simon Foong.

‘Aquaria Phuket’,has a water capacity of more than 7 million litres and is home to more than 51,000 aquatic animals from over 300 species. It was designed under the concept of ‘An Ocean of Myth and Legend’, inspired by Thailand’s mythology and culture from mystical Himmapan Forest to the deepest ocean. One part of the facility – Trick Eye Museum – is billed as the world’s first Augmented Reality art museum featuring AR technology to produce realistic art and panoramas.
