Eslite Shenzhen store closes after Covid-19 woes

Taiwanese bookstore Eslite is closing its operations in Shenzhen following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The store says it does not believe it is likely that the store will return to profit in the near future, and the store will be permanently shut. Besides Covid-19, during recent months, the store’s operations were also badly affected by construction in the vicinity, deterring customers from visiting.

Eslite is now down to two locations within greater China beyond Taiwan, with stores remaining in Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Figures released by the firm show that sales in Suzhou have recovered at a steady rate in contrast to the difficulties faced by the Shenzhen store.

The firm recently made headlines for shuttering its renowned 24-hour store in Taipei, the first such store in the city.
