New Town Plaza opens Hong Kong’s first rooftop turf sports park

New Town Plaza’s new turf park grass slide.

Hong Kong shopping centre New Town Plaza in Sha Tin opened a rooftop turf sports park today, billed as the first of its kind in the territory, and likely in broader Asia.

Sportzone takes up a 35,000sqft space and features seven fitness zones and a five-metre high grass slide. Besides offering space for visitors to exercise on their own, it will host three fitness training sessions for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Sports and fitness is more than a trend, but a lifestyle and attitude,” a spokesman for the mall said in advance of today’s soft opening.

The entire terrace area on level 5 of the centre has been reconfigured and covered with a green sports turf as the mall hopes to entice Hongkongers to work out – in turn adding to the foot traffic through the suburban centre.

Besides the high grass slide, other features include a hanging logs crossing path shaped in as an S with multiple logs hanging from a steel frame more than 17m long.  There’s a 15m rock climbing wall, a freestyle exercise area, 2000sqft basketball court and a mountain forest-themed resting area with two levels and a hidden pathway.
