MTR Corporation has opened a four-story shopping complex, The Wai, in Hong Kong’s Tai Wai district.

Located atop Tai Wai Station, the mall is 650,000sqft and reportedly houses more than 150 tenants. It is based on MTR’s Rail + Community concept, aiming to build sustainable and liveable communities by merging railway stations, residential blocks, shopping malls, and community facilities into a single convenient location.

Yamamotoya Sohonke Honke, a prominent udon restaurant in Nagoya, will launch its first Hong Kong location in The Wai. There will also be several new Chinese food brands, including Nim Yuet Lau and Modern Shanghai Imperial. Eslite Bookstore will also launch a location inside the shopping centre.

The mall is also connected to two railway lines, Tuen Ma and East Rail, as well as important tunnels, allowing customers to easily access Hong Kong, Kowloon, and the New Territories. It is also linked to the New Territories’ cycle track network, which connects East and West.

In addition, The Wai has more than 50,000sqft of green space, offering a vibrant setting for amusement and relaxation. It also has the largest indoor bicycle parking lot in Hong Kong, with 330 bicycle parking places.

New World Development sold its shares in two Hong Kong shopping complexes to MTR Corporation in 2020. MTR paid HKD3 billion (US$385 million) for the property giant’s 50 per cent holding in Telford Plaza II in Kowloon Bay and its 21 per cent ownership in PopCorn 2 in Tseung Kwan O.
