French luxury fashion house Balmain has appointed Matteo Sgarbossa as its new CEO, effective May 6.

Sgarbossa will succeed Jean-Jacques Guével, who stepped down last month after four years in the role.

In his new role, he will be responsible for supporting the company’s expansion and further accelerating its international success in all luxury regions, the label said in a statement. He will work closely with Olivier Rousteing, who has overseen the company’s creative direction since 2011.

Sgarbossa currently serves as international director at Givenchy, in charge of the LVMH sales network. He has also been a member of the executive committee since July 2020.

Before Givenchy, he was VP of retail Europe at Gucci between 2018 and 2020. He also spent more than seven years at Mango, taking up roles including international retail director and country manager for Italy, Belgium and Luxembourg.

“Matteo’s strong leadership skills and extensive experience in the fashion and luxury industry at senior levels make him the ideal person to lead Balmain,” said Rachid Mohamed Rachid, chairman of Balmain.

“I am convinced that his energy and knowledge of the global market will be decisive in this new phase for Balmain and that his partnership with Olivier Rousteing will lead to a very fruitful chapter in the history of the house.”
