LVMH-backed private equity firm L Catterton has acquired Kisshokichi, the world’s largest Kobe beef restaurant chain, as part of its broader push into the global food and beverage sector.
Founded in 2008, Kisshokichi operates about 50 restaurants across Japan and is the largest buyer of certified Kobe beef worldwide. The partnership aims to accelerate the chain’s growth and tap into rising international demand for premium Japanese cuisine.
According to Ray Yamaguchi, MD at L Catterton, demand for Kobe beef continues to grow, creating expansion opportunities for Kisshokichi both domestically and abroad.
“Demand is rising, particularly with Japan continuing to attract record high numbers of tourists, and Kisshokichi has significant headroom for further expansion, especially in key gateway cities,” added Yamaguchi.
Kobe beef, a title reserved for wagyu cattle that meet strict standards, is renowned for its marbling, tenderness and rich flavour.
L Catterton has a strong track record in the restaurant sector, with investments including PF Chang’s, Outback Steakhouse, Velvet Taco and Mendocino Farms.
Earlier this year, L Catterton also signed a strategic agreement with Japanese premium fishing gear manufacturer Megabass to support the latter’s expansion.
