Italian hatmaker Borsalino is preparing a formal entry into China through a new partnership with Shanghai-based Essence Group.
The agreement outlines a five-year development plan covering retail and e-commerce, with a phased rollout designed to build brand presence gradually rather than through rapid store expansion.
Borsalino’s first official store in the region is scheduled to open in Shanghai in the first half of this year. The location will mark the brand’s first directly operated retail presence in mainland China and is expected to serve as a benchmark for future openings.
Further mono-brand boutiques are planned for key luxury hubs across Greater China, though timelines and store numbers have not been disclosed.
Alongside brick-and-mortar expansion, Essence will oversee Borsalino’s local e-commerce strategy. An online flagship store is slated to launch later this year, supported by activity across Chinese social and content platforms, including Red, Douyin and WeChat.
“Borsalino is one of those rare maisons whose authority is immediately recognised by the most discerning consumers, even across different cultures,” said Essence Group CEO Alec Hou.
“This partnership is focused on creating a comprehensive framework that respects and safeguards Borsalino’s heritage while translating its relevance for a new generation of consumers in Greater China.”
Established in 1857 in Alessandria, Borsalino has built its reputation on heritage felt hats and stands among Italy’s oldest still-operating accessories houses.
For Essence Group, founded in 2000, the deal brings another European luxury label into a portfolio that already features Chanel, Prada, Loewe and La Mer.
