German footwear brand Birkenstock has opened its first brick-and-mortar concept store in Indonesia.
Located in Ubud, Bali, the store was designed by architect Yoka Sara and draws inspiration from the site’s history and traditional Balinese homes.
Sara says the entrance references the kitchen, traditionally the first space entered upon returning home, reflecting the meaning of ‘Umah’ – the Balinese word for home.
Meanwhile, the upper level showcases Birkenstock’s premium 1774 collection and an exhibition highlighting the craftsmanship behind each shoe, including the materials used in its construction.
The concept also includes a two-storey, 180sqm community space that will host wellness activities, including yoga, sound healing, and craft workshops led by local practitioners.
“We want to strengthen our presence in strategic markets while staying true to what defines us; creating experiences that are relevant to the places and communities we become part of,” said Birkenstock.
Before opening the new boutique in Indonesia, Birkenstock’s products were available in the country through select department stores.
