Coach opens new Japan store

American luxury goods retailer Coach has expanded in Japan with the opening of its ninth store in Tokyo.

The store in Omotesando Avenue features a façade of translucent glass boxes in a herringbone pattern, which accommodates both vertical and horizontal displays. It also features a tower of transparent illuminated cubes surrounding the main staircase, which doubles as additional display space.

At night, the acrylic tower acts like a lantern, illuminating the store and its glass façade from within.

“Omotesando is a key location relative to others for many reasons,” said president and chief commercial officer Victor Luis. “It is, after Ginza, the second tourist shopping destination in Tokyo. Omotesando, together with the Aoyama area, attracts a very fashion-forward consumer. We haven’t had a presence there, so for us it was a key void to some extent, but we don’t see this as just filling the gap.”

The 4944 sqft store, designed by architecture firm OMA, mimics the design of Coach’s store at Macy’s Herald Square in New York. It carries the entire collection of Coach’s lifestyle products.
