Lotte opens Jakarta duty-free

Korean conglomerate Lotte Group on Tuesday opened its biggest duty free shop in southeast Asia.

The new Lotte Duty Free Shop is at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta where annual passengers throughput is 10 million.

The 880sqm duty free shop is the first global duty free shop of the Korean giant which has 10 duty free shops in its home country.

Soekarno-Hatta’s Lotte Duty Free Shop marketing director Novita Wibowo said the store cost Lotte Rp 40 billion (US$4.45 million) to construct.

The store features mainstream duty free products including cosmetics, perfumes, alcohol and tobacco, along with brands including Estee Lauder, Mont Blanc, Coach, Dunhill and Chanel.

Lotte made its first foray into Indonesia in 2008 when it acquired 19 Makro stores and converted them to Lotte Mart hypermarkets. As of now, the group has 24 stores there, with plans to quadruple that count by 2018.

A 5500sqm shop at Ciputra World Mall in Jakarta is scheduled to open by the end of the year.

The group is also targeting Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali as one of the potential locations for its planned new duty free shops in the country.

“We are still conducting a feasibility study. We are targeting Bali because its airport’s passenger traffic is more than two times higher than that at Soekarno-Hatta,” said Wibowo.
