South Koreans acquire US shopping app

South Korea’s SK planet (SKP) has acquired US-based shopping app shopkick.

The acquisition is aimed at capturing a major piece of the growing US mobile commerce and location-based shopping market.

SKP is affiliated with SK Holdings and SK Telecom, Korea’s largest mobile carrier. It operates cross-channel web and mobile platforms, including OKcashbag, a consumer rewards program with 38 million members and partnering merchants from large to small sizes; mobile app store T-Store; and virtual mobile commerce marketplace 11st.

“The acquisition of shopkick will create the key platform of SK planet’s US mobile commerce business, and also expand our global market position,” said Jinwoo So, CEO of SKP.

“Shopkick’s dominant leadership position in mobile shopping in the US combined with our depth of business assets will allow us to build the best shopping products across the globe. Together, we will expand well beyond mobile, connecting online and offline shopping experiences in unprecedented ways,” added So.

Shopkick will continue under the leadership and vision of the current management team, but will add the resources and business assets of SKP to further accelerate its rapid growth among shoppers, retailers and brands.
