US retail sales rise

US retail sales rose for the first time in four months in March.

Americans spent more on furniture, clothing, building materials and cars according to the Commerce Department.

Total retail sales rose 0.9 per cent, more than reversing a 0.5 per cent decline in February.

Much of the drop off in retail sales has been blamed on a harsh winter, with analysts saying March’s warmer climate drew consumers out of their homes.

Motor vehicle sales rose 2.7 per cent and building materials by 2.1 per cent.

US retail sales are expected to show steady growth this year as more Americans have jobs, petrol prices are lower and there are signs of a general economic improvement.
