Japanese to launch Singapore Asahi Bar

A Japanese entrepreneur is raising cash to open the first Asahi Super Dry Extra Cold Bar in Singapore by the year’s end.

Seiki Takahashi, who has previously opened and managed more than 50 restaurants globally, is seeking to raise US$10 million to expand Japanese restaurant and bar concepts into new markets.

Last December, Takahashi launched the GP Asia Pacific Hospitality & Lifestyle LP fund, which owns the franchise rights to the ASahi bar concept, where the Japanese brewer’s beer is served at below zero temperatures.

The Singapore Asahi Bar is expected to find similar favour with customers as namesake bars in Japan and South Korea, according to reports.

Research conducted by the Japan Tourism Agency shows foreigners rank eating Japanese food as the most-liked activity in the Asian nation – ahead of even sightseeing. Takahashi is one of a growing group of entrepreneurs who wants to take authentic Japanese dining and drinking experiences into other nations.

“Japanese brands are appreciated in Asia. We want to bring those valued food and beverages as contents of lifestyle to other countries.”

His fund will extend beyond the Asahi concept. He told Bloomberg in an interview that he would would invest in “at least five deals in Singapore, the US and Hong Kong”. One is the Miyabi Steak & Seafood House a Teppanyaki style restaurant concept he will open in Denver, Colorado.
