Japanese retailer to open in Cambodia

Japanese supermarket operator Aeon Group will set its flag in Cambodia in 2014.

Aeon will open a shopping mall in Phnom Penh with a floor area of about 100,000 to 150,000 sqm. The company has already established a local subsidiary and construction of a shopping mall in the city centre is slated to start next year.

“I think it is great news that there is a large Japanese retailer investing in Cambodia.  Previously we have seen Malaysian and Vietnamese investors and now we are seeing investors from Japan and Hong Kong, which are premium developers entering the market,” said Daniel Parkes, country manager of CBRE Cambodia.

The Aeon mall will feature the Aeon supermarket and 150 tenants such as specialty shops from Japan, Cambodia and neighbouring countries.

Aeon decided to make its foray to Cambodia due to the country’s expected economic boom.  Aeon already has stores in Malaysia, China and Thailand.

Aeon will be the first Japanese retailer to enter Cambodian market.
