Chinese merchants embrace eBay

While local online retailers are struggling with competition, Chinese online sellers at eBay posted sharp growth of 68 per cent in the year to June.

According to eBay’s Greater China Exporter’s Index, around 7500 merchants achieved more than US$100,000 revenue each for 12 months, making them eBay’s biggest exporters from Asia, reports South China Morning Post.

“Business is booming for Chinese entrepreneurs who use eBay and PayPal as their global sales channel,” said John Lin, VP, eBay, Greater China.

The top five products sold by Chinese merchants include consumer electronics, clothing and accessories, mobile phones and accessories, jewellery and car parts.

The index also shows that US, Australia and Britain are the top three buyers of products sold by eBay’s merchants from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

It is predicted that shipments from eBay’s sellers in Greater China will reach 200 million by next year, which is equal to the expected shipment from the whole Asia this year, says Lin.

Chinese sellers say they will increase staff to keep up with the demand overseas.
