Siam Center reopening draws the masses

Massive crowds queued for the reopening of Bangkok mall Siam Center on Friday.

Operator Siam Piwat gave the first 1000 customers 1000 baht gift vouchers to spend in the centre.

The reopening ceremony cost more than 200 million baht (more than US$6 million), says CEO Chadatip Chutrakul.

Leighton Meester, Taion Cruz and Ed Westwick, “Hollywood celebrities” as well as local personalities Araya Hargate, Nadech Kugimiya, Urassaya Sperbund, Pakorn Chatborirak and Davika Hoorne attended the event.

One of the special aspects of the Siam Center grand opening was the “Pop Culture Art Exhibition” which showcases masterpieces from American pop artist Andy Warhol.

Apart from Warhol’s work, Siam Center also displays real art pieces of another icon of pop art, Roy Lichtenstein. The pop culture exhibition is designed to be interactive and visitors can take part in a new experience they have never felt before.

Another highlights of the opening is the “Fashion Exhibition” to showcase fashion collections by fashion brands Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons and Issey Miyake.

The collections are all of their “Archive” level, which means they are as close to the brand signature as possible and are kept as precious treasures by private collectors.

Among the owners of these rare collections in Thailand are Wongvipha Devahastin Na Ayudhya, and Monlacha Skulthai.

The items will be put on show alongside the work by Thailand’s leading designers including Theatre, Playhound by Greyhound and Wonder Anatomie in a demonstration of the power of fashion collaboration between international and local designers.

The opening also showcased a show called “The Illumination of Light” – a light and laser show which features a colorful moving light display of images to make every heart beat to the rhythm of multi-colored lighting.

The Illumination of Light was complemented by the power of music by Tul Waitunkiat as music curator in charge of all the music in the grand opening.

The first floor was the main floor of the event. Siam Center has set aside the whole lobby walkway and other main areas as “Idea Avenue” for top-tier artists and those of the new generation from Thailand and elsewhere to exhibit without limits.

“Fashion Visionary” was showcased on the third floor, housing the largest number of Thai designer brands.

DJs came together to keep the grand opening alive with music on the fourth floor.

“We believe that the grand opening of Siam Center will create a new industry benchmark as a global phenomenon for everyone to remember for years for its greatness,” said Chutrakul.
