Gap to enter India

US retailer Gap is readying to enter India with its first store planned for next year.

The company, which owns brands Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Piperlime and Athleta, has sent its former US-based VP for global production, Rajiv Malik, to manage the team in India. Malik now acts as GM for sourcing in India.

“We will probably be here next year. India is a market for us in the future,” said Malik who added that the company has not yet decided whether to operate solo or through partnership.

Swedish retailer H&M is also reported to be in the process of applying for approval to operate company-owned stores in India. The two companies will face competition from its rival Zara which has been operating in the country since 2010.
