Lazada launches marketplace

Rocket Internet-backed Lazada has launched a marketplace that allows small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to sell products online through any of its websites in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Dubbed the ‘Amazon of Southeast Asia’, Lazada will enable merchants to set up their online shop without spending significant capital.

The marketplace will also allow merchants to access Lazada’s massive customer base across Southeast Asia.

“The number of partnership requests we received made us realise the massive demand and we are glad to provide this opportunity to all merchants in the region,” said Lazada CEO Maximilian Bittner.

“We’re now a B2C company, and will be looking towards becoming a B2B2C company,” he added.

Lazada’s expansion comes after a series of investments from Verlinvest, JP Morgan, Kinnevik, Summit Partners and Tengelmann.
