KFC plans China store makeovers

Fast food chain KFC says it will revamp its outlets in China to attract more customers.

About 130 of its 4600 outlets will undergo a major revamp in the first stage, including new interior design, better mobile experiences and wifi access. The makeover will also see the addition of modern-themed paintings and the use of wooden tables.

The chain will also use electronic menus and staff will get new uniform designs.

The main objective of the revamp is to create an ambience of social hangout, opposed to the traditional to-go fast-food chain, it says.

“The new designs will offer more quality service and a comfortable environment for social interaction and business meetings,” said Su Jingshi, Yum’s China chairman and CEO.

The revamp comes on the heels of KFC’s recovery from fears of Avian flu and a poultry supply scandal.

Parent company Yum! Brands recently said first quarter same store sales in China grew nine per cent including an 11 per cent growth at KFC.

It also remains optimistic about the China market with plan to open some 700 new outlets this year.
