Carrefour exits India

French retailer Carrefour is pulling the plug on its four-year-old operation in India.

Carrefour is to shut down its five cash and carry stores in India by September after its JV talks with Bharti Group failed.

“Until that time, the company will continue to be fully engaged with all its employees, suppliers, partners and customers to ensure a smooth transition,” the company said in a statement.

India will mark the sixth market Carrefour has pulled out of after Indonesia, Colombia, Greece, Malaysia and Singapore.

The retailer says it is exiting underperforming markets to focus on reviving its French business.
