Malaysian food franchise thinks global

The Chicken Rice Shop plans to continue its overseas expansion, targeting Australia this time.

The Malaysian food franchise, which specialises in Hainanese style chicken – a steamed chicken served with rice – is currently seeking partners to help it grow in Australia.

“We are looking for master franchisees – people who can open between eight and 10 stores over a 10 year period,” Richard Backstrom, the company’s international business development head of international franchising, told journalist Brea Carter of Franchise.net.au.

The franchise currently has 60 company-operated stores in Malaysia and 10 franchised stores in Singapore and the Philippines.

Backstrom says they’re also targeting China, the Middle East and Europe as future markets.
