Muji seeks growth abroad

Japanese lifestyle retailer Muji plans to offset slowing sales at home by further expanding abroad.

Muji, distinguished by its minimalist branding and design, plans to open up to eight stores across Canada over the next five years, the first in Toronto in November.

The retailer currently has 255 overseas stores, including 100 in China, with 385 at home.

Many Japanese retailers including Muji are setting their sights internationally as the country’s aging population weighs down sales growth at home.

Meanwhile, Muji has collaborated with tech company Infosys to deliver a “superior shopping experience” through real-time insights into the buying behavior of its customers.

It has deployed Muji Passport to collect customer’s purchase trends and activity data including offline store data.
