Metro taking over Carrefour’s Meerut store

German retailer Metro has reported to take over Carrefour’s store in Meerut, a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Carrefour is pulling out of the Indian market, closing its stores in Delhi, Jaipur, Bangalore, Meerut and Agra, as part of its effort to exit under-performing markets.

The three stores in Delhi, Jaipur and Agra will be taken over by its rival Walmart.

Neither Walmart or Metro have officially commented on the reports, but Indian media have confirmed a deal has been struck with the stores’ landlords.

Walmart and Metro respectively operate 20 and 16 cash and carry stores in India.
