Indian QSR chain eyes Sydney, New York

The owner of India’s largest quick service restaurant chain says it is scouting for opportunities in key overseas markets including Sydney, New York and Singapore.

Spring Leaf Retail owns India’s Mast Kalandar, described as the developing nation’s largest QSR chain.

According to an article in The Deccan Herald the company now wants to expand its footprint overseas and develop FMCG produces, such as curry powders, cookies and confectionery.

Spring Leaf Retail CEO Gaurav Jain told the newspaper his company wants to “solidify” its core business in QSR.

“We are scouting for opportunities in (Indian) Tier II and Tier III cities. We are also looking to open outlets in Singapore, Dubai, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney.

“We started off our journey in 2006 with a restaurant on Bannerghatta Rd. Now, we have reached 65 outlets with operational income of US$11 million. Our plan is to become a QSR chain with 500 outlets by 2017-18,” Jain said.

He said discussions are already underway with existing shareholders with a view ot raising additional funding for such expansion.

Mast Kalandar restaurants are on average 1200 sqft, up to a maximum of 3500 sqft. It has standalone restaurants and kiosks and operates a thriving delivery business.
