Tesco opens next gen Malaysia store

Tesco has unveiled its latest model Malaysian hypermarket, anchoring a new shopping mall in Putrajaya, the nation’s capital city.

The new store, Tesco’s 51st in the nation, anchors the 1.4 million sqft IOI City Mall, 35km from downtown Kuala Lumpur and close to the international airport.

Industry research house IGD says the hypermarket displays “a very different look and feel to” Tesco’s previously opened standard stores with a significantly upgraded in-store experience. “New lighting, a stronger use of wooden fixtures, bold fresh food counters and an excellent fresh produce section all deliver a high quality first impression.”

A new style of bold signage features throughout, with strong, colourful photography of fresh food.

“This complements well with the stronger foodservice element and an in-store dining area and fresh pizza counter,” reports IGD.

“There is also significant evidence of stronger category execution, with bold supplier activity in confectionery, a self service spice section called ‘The Spice Co’, a dedicated BWS section and new look baby, health and beauty, and homeware categories.”

IGD says the store demonstrates a step forward in Tesco’s global format execution, combining best elements from format trials in the UK and new initiatives that have clearly been formulated in Malaysia.

“This is the latest in a number of new look formats we have seen from Tesco around the world, including a hypermarket of the future store that it launched in Letnany, north east Prague in September, the Philpot Lane food-to-go Express stores it opened in London this summer and its Lincoln Extra hypermarket of the future that opened in May.

“With its exposure to hypermarkets globally, Tesco is clearly keen to continue its journey of future proofing the customer experience in these stores, improving its quality perception, but at the same time ensuring that it delivers a strong price message to savvy shoppers,” said IGD.
