Muji debuts in Canada

Japanese anti-brand chain Muji has opened its first store in Canada.

Muji Canada’s debut store takes up 370sqm of floor space in the Atrium centre in West Toronto, Ontario.

It will stock about 2800 products, of which 80-0 are garments and accessories, the balance homewares.

Muji was originally called Mujirushi Ryohin, which literally translated, means “no brand quality goods”. Muji believes the value of the product is in what it is, even without the name of the brand and/or the name of person designing it.

“The core of Muji products lies in its flexibility and modesty to fit different thoughts and styles of the individuals,” Muji Canada explains in its launch statement. “Muji does not direct its product range at any one particular sector, rather aims to be universally relevant. Muji products maintain reasonable price levels, not by compromising quality, but by careful selection of materials and the elimination of unnecessary production processes and wasteful packaging.”

Muji, founded in 1980, sells a wide variety of household, apparel and food products. It now has more than 385 stores in Japan and 255 stores in other countries across Asia, Europe, and the US.

Muji Canada was created in April to develop a network of stores across the Canadian market.
