Japanese gym concept Rizap goes global

Japanese personal training company Rizap will open its first private gym in Hong Kong next Monday, June 8.

The gym, in downtown Central, will offer high-end wellness training programs to customers – in total privacy, unlike conventional gyms, where people train in open rooms.

It’s that point of difference which Rizap, owned by listed Japanese company Kenkou Corp,  says gives it a point of difference in a market crowded with international brands.

The new gym will offer one-on-one services to customers with personalised training program fitting individuals’ needs, according to the Director of Rizap Hong Kong, Jun Sato.

“For Rizap, Hong Kong presents a very dynamic market with a diverse cluster of customers who are highly health-conscious. Opening our studio in the heart of Central also offers convenience in terms of location for executives who are busy but need quality body-building training nearby.”

Kenkou founder and president Takeshi Seto told Bloomberg in an interview in April the company aimed to have 100 gyms running in Japan by next March, up from the then 39.And as well as entering Hong Kong it plans to expand into South Korea, Australia, Canada, Germany and the UK.

“The global health and fitness market is huge,” he said. “Being healthy is what people want the most to have a happy life.”

In Hong Kong this week, Jun Sato added:  “In Japan, our clientele has grown significantly over the past two years, because of the privacy we offer for customers. We see the same demand for safe, secure and efficient personal training services in Hong Kong. I think that we also set ourselves apart from conventional gyms with our life-long partnership commitment with customers. We are always there to support them on their roads to health and bodybuilding.”

Associate director-general of investment promotion Jimmy Chiang said Hong Kong has a fast-paced lifestyle and its citizens focus on health and a quality lifestyle.

“That’s why Hong Kong is an ideal location for premium fitness companies like Rizap that seek to expand their business globally from Hong Kong.”

Rizap opened its first gym centre in Japan in 2012.
