Asics US closes last standalone store

Japanese sports shoe brand Asics has closed its last United States standalone store as its long running dispute with distributor Windsor Financial Group worsens.

The last to be shuttered was the brand’s 465 sqm Times Square New York flagship, which has traded less than a year. The closure came on the eve of the New York Marathon, which the brand is sponsoring, adding further embarrassment to its reputation in the North American market.

That marked the 13th store to close, although the brand is still on sale in multibrand stores.

Windsor Financial Group has the exclusive rights to run Asics retail stores in the US. Lawsuits are now pending, with Windsor claiming Asics required it to open large stores but failed to ship promised merchandise beyond running shoes.

There is also a dispute over funding for brand marketing.

Windsor previously operated stores in New York, New Jersey, Boston, Chicago and Southern California.

Asics terminated the partnership in July, citing non payment of licensing fees, amongst other breaches of contract.
