Samsonite Singles Day sales surge 132 per cent

Samsonite, the world’s largest travel luggage retailer, says its Singles Day sales soared 132 per cent this year.
Alibaba reported total sales on the world’s biggest online retail sales day rose 60 per cent year on year, meaning Samsonite’s performance was more than double that of the overall online market.
Sales by the brand through its Tmall.com flagship totalled RMB27 million (US$4.2 million) in estimated retail value according to a statement from the company.
The group’s Samsonite and American Tourister brands represented the majority of its sales on Tmall, with the recently launched Sigma as well as Munich collections proving the most popular.
Ramesh Tainwala, CEO, said the phenomenal Singles Day sales performance on Tmall reinforces the importance of Samsonite’s multi-brand strategy in the digital arena as this continues to be a key channel  fuelling the growth of our business in China.
“The huge success of this event clearly highlights the remarkable growth and popularity of eCommerce with Chinese consumers, and we are catering to this by strengthening our leadership in this channel.”
Samsonite launched its first online flagship store on China’s largest eCommerce website, Tmall.com, in 2011.
