American pop star Katy Perry will perform at a gala event to kick off Alibaba Group’s Global Shopping Festival in Shenzhen on November 10.

At the Alibaba 11.11 launch Countdown, she will sing her latest single Rise. The eCommerce giant has named Perry as “global ambassador” to promote China’s largest shopping day of the year worldwide.

Alibaba says the singer’s international profile “perfectly fits the theme of the 11.11 gala”.
Known as Shui Guo Jie, or “Fruit Sister”, in China because of her brightly coloured outfits, Perry says she is excited to be the festival’s ambassador.

In another retail-linked move, Perry last month formed a joint venture with branded apparel, footwear and fashion accessories company Global Brands Group Holding with the aim of growing her brand in a range of consumer product categories.

The director of the 11.11 Countdown Gala Celebration will be Hollywood producer David Hill, known for his work on the Oscars, NFL Super Bowls and reality show American Idol. Alibaba has yet to list the other performers.
