Squarestreet aims to set tails wagging

A miniature winter village has been built at Nordic lifestyle boutique Squarestreet in a bid to raise funds during the festive season to save and rehome abandoned dogs.

Central to the charitable partnership with animal shelter Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR), the miniature village, dubbed Dogtown, measures just 120 by 80cm. It was created over two months by the team at Squarestreet, in Sheung Wan.

Dogtown highlights a mix of Hong Kong and Scandinavian features including an HKDR house, model railway, European buildings and milking shed alongside food stalls featuring Hong Kong and Swedish delicacies.

It is free for the public to view the installation, and miniature dog or human figures can be bought and placed in Dogtown, which is mostly deserted. Donors can even name their dog or human character to become part of the story of the winter village.

An official HKDR donation box has been placed at the shop with all proceeds going directly to help dogs waiting for their forever home.

Founded in 2003, HKDR saves dogs and puppies from the Hong Kong Government’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) animal-management centres, where about 10,000 animals are destroyed every year. These homeless dogs are given only four days to live unless chosen for rehoming.
