Starbucks is to launch its 1000th store in the city of Shanghai, which is coincidentally the brand’s 6000th in Mainland China.

The store, which will open on Friday (September 30), is situated in Shanghai Lippo Plaza, the same building where the brand opened its first location in Shanghai more than 20 years ago.

The new Shanghai Lippo Plaza Store will feature minimalist-style furniture and casework made using recycled straw material. At the entrance, customers can view a mug wall made up of a collection of Starbucks signature city mugs introduced over the years. Old green aprons worn by Starbucks partners have been recycled to create the store’s artwork.

The new site, according to Starbucks, will increasingly put a focus on digital technology as the business pushes forward with its digital transformation goal to improve customer experiences and boost in-store productivity.

Starbucks says the Shanghai Lippo Plaza Store is the latest addition to its growing list of Greener Stores in China. It uses sustainable solutions across the entire process, from design to building to operations, to reduce carbon, water use, and waste.

Along with the launch of its new location, Starbucks has designed a signature handcrafted coffee beverage for Shanghai coffee aficionados – Shanghai Coffee in Crema Ristretto style. The beverage is available at all of the city’s Starbucks locations.

“It has been a privilege to share our love for coffee with local customers, and contribute to the development of China’s coffee culture and its specialty coffee industry over the past two decades,” said Leo Tsoi, CEO of Starbucks China.

By 2025, Starbucks plans to run 2500 Greener Stores in addition to 900 stores in 300 cities in China.
