Aesop has opened its first store in Mainland China, on Dongping Road in Shanghai, an understated residential neighbourhood also known as “Lovers Road,” in the city’s former French Concession.

The Aesop Shanghai store, with a footprint of 3230sqft over two storeys, was designed in the style of Chinese workmanship and using local materials.

The store features floor-to-ceiling windows, an arched entryway, and ceilings adorned with locally obtained dried bullrush installations weaved by Chinese artist Didi Wu in an effort to reflect regional handicraft traditions.

The centre of the store features basins made of Guizhou travertine stone, as well as classic French furniture and light fixtures.

The Aesop China store also has private sinks and a garden filled with therapeutic Chinese herbs; a green-tiled “Sensorium” aroma chamber; on the second level is a rest and working area designated for the store’s staff.

The Australian-founded, Brazilian-owned skincare and cosmetics company announced plans for an Aesop Shanghai store in August.
