Thai food tech startup Yindii has acquired Hong Kong surplus food-rescue app Phenix by OnTheList.

The value of the deal was not disclosed.

Hong Kong’s OnTheList and France-based social enterprise Phenix formed the joint venture Phenix by OnTheList in 2021 to offer shoppers goods from restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets and cake shops which would otherwise be discarded, at a discounted price.

The Yindii app was founded by Louis-Alban Batard-Dupre with the mission to tackle food waste by creating a platform for customers to buy unsold edible food from hotels, restaurants, grocery stores and bakeries at lower prices instead of being of throw away.

“This strategic acquisition marks a major step for us and a concretisation of our regional ambitions,” said Batard-Dupre.

Since its launch, Yindii has joined hands with more than 600 partners, including Texas Chicken, JW Marriott, FamilyMart, King Power and Tops.

“This acquisition demonstrates that Yindii’s mission to reduce food waste knows no borders, and solidifies our position as the leader in the surplus food sector in Asia,” said Batard-Dupre.
