Galeries Lafayette opens store in Shenzhen

French department store Galeries Lafayette has opened its first location in Southern China in Shenzhen’s downtown UpperHills complex through a joint venture with Hopson Group.

Galeries Lafayette Shenzhen will be followed by two other department stores in Chongqing and Macau later this year. The 4500sqm luxury shopping premise spans two levels and is home to more than 100 brands, including JW Anderson, Cafe Kitstune, Jil Sande and Balmain.

The opening is part of Galeries Lafayette’s expansion plan in China announced earlier this year, under which the company will roll out 10 department stores in the country by 2025 with Hopson Group.

The group entered the market in 2013 with the first store opened in Beijing, followed by two in Shanghai.

The French department store has 57 locations in its home market. The group signed an agreement with Indian fashion conglomerate Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail last year to expand into India with two flagship stores scheduled to open in the next two years.
