Japanese department store operator Sogo & Seibu has opened a high-end department store in Malaysia’s newly opened upmarket shopping mall The Exchange TRX in Kuala Lumpur.
The new Seibu department store, marking the chain’s third international location after two stores in Indonesia, spans about 23,000sqm and four levels.
Seibu at The Exchange TRX is home to more than 700 luxury international and Japanese brands, including Chanel, Dior, Mulberry and Hermes. It also houses the largest Beauty Hall in the country with 116 beauty brands. The department store was designed by UK architect Cardy Papa, who is behind the designs of major retail and department stores, including Selfridges, Galeries Lafayette and Brown Thomas.
The launch coincides with the opening of The Exchange TRX, a retail and lifestyle destination featuring 400 stores with a net lettable area of 1.3 million sqft. Besides Seibu, major retailers making market debuts at the mall include Gentle Monster, Shake Shack, and Drunk Elephant.
“We don’t see ourselves as a retail mall, we see ourselves as a destination where Malaysians and international guests can experience the best of what Malaysia has to offer in a perfect setting,” he told Inside Retail.
