Nike has filed a lawsuit against Hong Kong star and former brand ambassador Edison Chen for allegedly breaching their contract by signing with rival Adidas.

In a filing at a US federal district court in California earlier this week, the sneaker brand accused Chen of abruptly switching to its rival without prior negotiation and that his new work involves the disclosure of trade secrets and intellectual property infringement.

Chen is a Hong Kong singer and the founder of streetwear brand Clot. Nike and Clot began their partnership in 2006 with the launch of a collaborative sneaker line.

Adidas and Chen disclosed their partnership at Clot’s spring 2024 show, but it was learned during Shanghai Fashion Week in October 2023 that Chen was shifting course.

Nike seeks to collect over $126,615 owed by Los Angeles-based Juice, the parent company of Clot. The lawsuit states that Chen, as the owner of the company, guaranteed Juice’s obligations to Nike.

“Juice has breached its account agreement with Nike, and the guarantor has breached his personal guarantee to Nike by failing to compensate Nike for the products Nike provided to Juice,” the document reads.
