Japanese retailer Muji has initiated a recall of around 600,000 room fragrance sprays after bacteria were detected during production. 

The recall covers 11 fragrance variants of the 300ml Room Fragrance Spray, which has been on sale since September 2024. 

While the bacteria found are considered to pose a low health risk, Muji said it is taking precautionary action to ensure consumer safety. No related illnesses have been reported to date.

Muji apologised for the incident and said it is strengthening hygiene controls and reviewing production processes to prevent future contamination. 

“We sincerely apologise to our customers for the concern and inconvenience caused. We will make a company-wide effort to prevent a recurrence,” the company said in a statement. 

Customers can return the affected items for a full refund at Muji stores, on the company’s website, or via its customer service hotline.

Last month, Muji announced its plan to expand its global footprint with major flagship store openings in Southeast Asia and Europe as part of a broader international growth strategy.
