Burger King Korea is strengthening its retail strategy by opening its first global flagship store in Seoul’s Seongsu district.

The new store, Flameground, is operated by BKR and combines Burger King’s signature flame-grilled burgers with exclusive menu items, merchandise and a reservation-only dining experience. The store is scheduled to open on September 10.

According to local reports, BKR is positioning the concept beyond a traditional quick-service restaurant, tapping into demand for experiential retail and food destinations in Seongsu.

The opening forms part of Burger King Korea’s broader growth ambitions. The company is targeting sales of 1.1 trillion won (approximately US$797 million) this year and plans to expand its network to more than 600 stores.

Burger King entered South Korea in 1984 with the opening of its first store in Jongno under a local franchise agreement. The business was acquired by VIG Partners in 2012 before being sold to Hong Kong-based Affinity Equity Partners in 2016.

Affinity launched a sale process for its Burger King businesses in South Korea and Japan in 2022, although the divestment plans did not proceed at the time.

In June, however, Affinity reportedly revived plans to sell BKR, the Korean operator of Burger King and Tim Hortons, according to The Korea Herald, restarting a divestment process that had been shelved four years earlier.
