Theory has appointed James Kelly as its new global CEO, promoting a longtime Fast Retailing executive as the New York-based fashion brand undergoes a leadership transition.
Kelly succeeds Dinesh Tandon, who will become global co-chief operating officer alongside Serena Peck and return as CEO of Theory China. Tandon has led the brand globally since 2019.
Kelly joined Theory in 2022 as CFO before moving into the role of global co-chief operating officer. As CEO, he will oversee Theory and Helmut Lang, with responsibility for global headquarters functions, commercial operations and international growth.
Before joining Theory, Kelly held several senior roles at Fast Retailing, the Japanese parent company of Theory, where he was involved in Uniqlo’s expansion across the US and Canadian markets.
Founded in New York in 1997, Theory has built its identity around refined tailoring, modern silhouettes and an emphasis on fit and fabric innovation. Its development of stretch materials helped establish a distinctive approach to contemporary dressing, combining polish with ease.
Theory was sold by founders Andrew Rosen and Elie Tahari to Japanese licensee Link International in 2003, with Fast Retailing taking full ownership of the business in 2009. Link, later renamed Link Theory Holdings, acquired Helmut Lang from Prada Group in 2006.
